It is used on smaller devices that do not require a ground connection. Early designs allowed the two flat blades to be inserted either in horizontal and vertical positions. There are now modern plugs that have neutral blades that are wider than the live blade so that a polarized plug can only be inserted one way. The new polarized Type A electrical plug will not fit in old Type A outlets, but both old and new Type A electrical plugs will fit into the new Type A and B electrical outlets.

Nema 1-15 and 5-15 are standard in Canada, the United States and Mexico. So if you came from North America, your plugs will fit, but you will have to make sure that your equipment can handle the voltage, which is considered twice as high than they regularly use.
