Electrical Outlet and Voltage Information for the Principality of Liechtenstein

Travelers who have the Principality of Liechtenstein in their itineraries should be prepared and must know which electrical outlet and plug types are used in this country. In the Principality of Liechtenstein, the volts used is 230 volts and the frequency is 50 Hertz. The Type J Swiss SEV 1011 3-pin electrical adapter plug and electrical outlet as well as the Type C European CEE 7/16 Europlug are used in the Principality of Liechtenstein.  When an appliance or an electronic gadget does not match the shape of the sockets of the electrical outlet, a travel plug adapter will be needed. Moreover, the Principality of Liechtenstein is also known as Fürstentum Liechtenstein.

Type J Swiss SEV 1011

Type J Swiss SEV 1011 Adapter

The Type J Swiss SEV 1011 adapter would allow appliances and gadgets that have a different type of plug to work in  Liechtenstein. The receptacle end of the Type J Swiss SEV 1011 is compatible  with any standard household plug except the Type M South African SABS1661, also known as the Old British BS-546. Also, the pins of the Type J Swiss SEC 1011 are 4.0mm in diameter, similar to the Europlug, with the only difference of the third pin being present to allow grounded connections for the Type J electrical outlet. This kind of adapter, plug, and outlet, the Type J Swiss SEV 1011, is commonly used in the appliances and gadgets in the Principality of Liechtenstein. The Type J Swiss SEV 1011 adapter will work well with the Type J Swiss SEC 1011 electrical outlet. Moreover, Europlugs could be plugged into Swiss outlets but the connection will not be grounded. Swiss plugs and adapters, like the Type J Swiss SEV 1011, can only be plugged into a Swiss electrical outlet. This kind of plug is almost similar to the Brazilian N standard type as well but the earth pin of the Type J is further away from the center line of the type N (5mm instead of 3mm). Most of the time, this kind of connector system is used for applications that use up to 10 amps. If it goes beyond 10 amps, the electronic gadget or appliance must be wired permanently to an electrical supply system with appropriate branch circuit protection or be connected to a main system with appropriate high power industrial connector.

In addition, Liechtenstein has a two-pin plug with the same pin shape, size, and spacing, but with a flattened, hexagonal form. This will fit into Swiss electrical outlet types as well as the CEE 7/16 electrical outlet. Other countries aside from the Principality of Liechtenstein that use the Type J Swiss SEV 1011 plug, adapter, and electrical outlet are El Salvador, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Maldives, Rwanda, and Switzerland. Also, among all the pins available, the Type J Swiss SEV 1011 is the most dangerous in the world because the prongs are not insulated. Compared to other plugs like type C, G, I, L, or N, that have a black covering in its pins, the Type J of  the Principality of Liechtenstein does not have this covering. Thus when the plug is pulled halfway out and the prongs are still connected to the electrical outlet and it might cause electrocution and other accidents among people when they pull the plug out and put their fingers around it, especially little kids.

Type C CEE 7/16 Europlug

Type C Europlug Adapter

The Type C Europlug is also known as the CEE 7/16 (Europlug 2.5 A/250 V unearthed), which is a bit similar, only slightly smaller than the CEE 7/17. It is one of the most commonly used electrical outlet and plug in  the Principality of Liechtenstein. The Type C Europlug alters the shape of the appliance’s plug so that it could be used into a “Type C” European CEE 7/16 Class II non-grounded Europlug socket or a Soviet-era Russian GOST 7396 Class II non-grounded socket commonly used in  the Principality of Liechtenstein. Also, the receptacle end of the adapter is usually compatible with any standard electronic household plug from any country, aside from the “Type M” South African SABS1661 plug, also known as the Old British BS-546 Large.

The plug end of Type C Europlug is compatible as well with the other types of sockets used in Europe like the grounded “Type F” German and “Type E” French Schuko socket, “Type L” Italian socket, “Type H” Israeli socket, “Type J” Swiss socket, and “Type K” Danish socket, although connections to some of these sockets are non-grounded. The pins of this Type C Europlug are 4.0mm in diameter, 19mm long and are spaced apart by 19 mm. In using appliances and gadgets in the Principality of Liechtenstein the Type C Europlug could also be safely used along with Type C, Type E, Type F, and some Type L electrical outlet. This plug is also non-polarized and non-grounded. In most developing countries where modern electrical structure is lacking, the usual electrical outlet used is the Type C Europlug.

Type C Europlug outlet

In addition, the Europlug is also the most widely used electrical outlet all over continental Europe and in the former Soviet Republics. Aside from the Principality of Liechtenstein, there are also countries in Middle East, Southeast Asia, Pacific Rim region, Central and South America, and Caribbean that use this kind of adapter.

The Principality of Liechtenstein, bordered by Switzerland, Germany and Austria, is a doubly landlocked alpine country in Europe and a vacation in this place should not be ruined simply because of the problems caused by incompatibilities of the plug and electrical outlet used. When an electronic gadget or an appliance is plugged in the wrong electrical outlet in  the Principality of Liechtenstein that uses a different kind of voltage, this might cause serious problems ranging from the frying of the electronic gadget to fire.
